Yahoo Australia will join Google’s News Showcase platform under a payments deal with the tech company.
News Showcase launched in February this year and allows Google to pay news publishers a fixed monthly royalty for their content. News Showcase is available on the Google News and Discover app, and there are plans to make it available in search.
“This new agreement will allow us to reinvest in producing higher quality, more local journalism, and take our strategy to the next level,” said Simon Wheeler, senior director of content at Yahoo Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia.
“This is a historic day not only for Yahoo and Google, but for all lovers of high quality local content. This new agreement guarantees an investment in the future of Australian digital journalism.
Google has already made payment deals with other Australian publishers, including News Corp Australia, Seven West Media and Guardian Australia. The deals emerged as part of the news media bargaining code with the passage of the Australian parliament earlier this year.
“Google has been a proud supporter of the Australian media industry for two decades and we are delighted that Yahoo Australia will soon be part of News Showcase – our biggest commitment yet,” said AUNZ Shilpa Jhunjhunwala, Head of Press Partnerships at Google.
“Yahoo Australia will join over 100 titles across Australia, including many regional regions, and nearly 1,000 international outlets. “
