How to Set Minimum Tab Width in Google Chrome

Google Chrome users who add tabs to the browser eventually come to a point where the tabs are no longer added to the browser, apparently. Although Chrome adds the tabs, it does not display them in the browser’s tab bar.

Prior to this, Chrome users will notice that browser tabs shrink so much that not even the site icon is displayed, let alone the webpage title.

Google has implemented several techniques over the past year to address this issue. The most important feature is Tab Groups, which Chrome users can use to create collapsing groups of tabs in the browser to open more tabs there without encountering any of the problems described.

Tab scrolling is another feature. It’s still experimental, but available in Chrome Stable and all development editions of the browser. When enabled, it unlocks tab scrolling, which Chrome does not support by default.

Tab scrolling can have a positive side effect: it limits the minimum width of browser tabs in Chrome. Once configured, Chrome tabs will no longer shrink to empty icons in the extreme case.

Configure Tab Scrolling and a Minimum Tab Width in Chrome

Note: Tab scrolling is an experimental feature. It may one day be natively integrated into Chrome, or be removed again by Google.

Here’s how to configure the feature:

  1. Load chrome://flags/#scrollable-tabstrip in the browser address bar.
  2. Activate the status button, which says Default, to display the available options.
  3. Select one of the following values to set a minimum tab width in Chrome:
    • Enabled – tabs shrink to pinned tab width
    • Enabled – tabs are reduced to a medium width.
    • Enabled – tabs shrink to full width.
    • Enabled – tabs do not shrink.
  4. Restart the browser once you have made the selection.

You may need to experiment with values for medium and large width tabs, as Google does not reveal pixel values for these. If you don’t want Chrome to minimize tabs at all, select the value no to prevent this from happening.

The flag also allows scrolling of tabs. Once you open a number of tabs in Chrome, scroll buttons appear on the right side of the tab bar. These can be used to cycle through the available tabs.

The only downside of using tab scrolling is that some tabs might not be visible on the tab bar, because you have to scroll to make them visible.

Now you: tab groups, scrolling tabs or something else? How do you manage tabs?
